Etymology[edit]

From Proto-West Germanic *þwangi (strap), from Proto-Germanic *þwangiz, from Proto-Indo-European *twenk- (to squeeze). Cognates include Old English þwang (thong), Old Saxon *thwang and Old Dutch *thwang. The change in meaning is shared with Dutch dwang (compulsion).
