From Middle English tobursten, tobresten, from Old English tōberstan (to burst asunder, shatter), from Proto-Germanic *tebrestaną (to burst asunder), equivalent to to- (apart) +‎ burst. Cognate with Old Saxon tebrestan, German zerbersten.
