Borrowed from Latin toxicus (“poisoned”), from toxicum (“poison”), from Ancient Greek τοξικόν (toxikón) [φάρμακον (phármakon)] ("poison for use on arrows"), from τοξικός (toxikós, “relating to arrows or archery”), from τόξον (tóxon, “bow”).
