Esperanto[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From transgenra (transgender) +‎ -eco (-ness), from trans- (across) +‎ genro (gender) +‎ -a.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): [transɡenˈret͡so]
  • Audio:(file)
  • Rhymes: -et͡so
  • Hyphenation: trans‧gen‧re‧co

Noun[edit]

transgenreco (accusative singular transgenrecon, plural transgenrecoj, accusative plural transgenrecojn)

  1. the state of being transgender; transgenderism; transgenderness.

Usage notes[edit]

Many Esperanto speakers, including some transgender speakers, consider this an anglicism and prefer transsekseco, noting that the earliest notable monolingual Esperanto dictionary by Kazimierz Bein gave two definitions of the word sekso, one biological and one social. As in many other languages, genro originally referred to a purely grammatical concept.
