Inherited from Vulgar Latin *ūlŭlare (with dissimilation of /l–l/), modified from Latin ŭlŭlāre. Doublet of ulular, a borrowing from Latin. Compare Occitan udolar, ulodar; French hurler; Spanish aullar.
