Etymology 1[edit]

Compare Latvian valte ((type of) boat), which according to Endzelīns is from Proto-Indo-European *welH- (to turn, wind), whence also vélti (to roll) and Latvian velt (to roll).

Possibly the same word as #Etymology 3 below, valtis (fishing net). Compare Greek γρίπος (grípos, fishing net; fishing boat).

Cognate with Old Prussian wolti (ear (of corn)), Proto-Slavic *voltъ/*voltь (panicle). From Proto-Balto-Slavic *wolˀtis, from Proto-Indo-European *wolHt-. Related to Proto-Celtic *woltos (hair).
