Etymology[edit]

Literally, “simian pox”. Coined by Montreal-based RÉZO, in parallel with the effort to change the English term from monkeypox to mpox; to remove stigmatization of gay men from the 2022 outbreak, in associating them with being monkeys (singe).[1]
