Etymology[edit]
From Low German, from underlying God verdor(r)e di/ju, which means “may God make you lose your mind”, related with Tor (“fool”), or alternatively “may God make you wither, shrivel”, related with verdorren (“to wither”). Compare Dutch verdorie.
