Etymology[edit]

Compound of viktualie (victual) +‎ vikt (weight). First attested in 1665.[1]

Noun[edit]

viktualievikt c

  1. (historical) A Swedish system of units of weight/mass, mostly used for victuals.
    • 1906 December 14, “En stark karl [A strong man]”, in Falköpingsposten[1], page 6:
The Billing man then took and tried to overturn Anders Larsson's sled with 4 ship pounds of ore (one ship pound equals 27 lispounds 5 bowl pounds victual weight), but Anders Larsson resisted and the sled with contents was lifted by both of them high from the road.
    • 1834 June 6, “Det nya myntsystemet [The new monetary system]”, in Aftonbladet[2], page 4:
In the proposed new coin system, the Committee has also added another advantage, in the copper pennies themselves, 100 of which constitute a Swedish pound victual weight, so that, when the new weight system is adopted, these pennies have a set weight for the best price.
