From Proto-Albanian *uell-, from Proto-Indo-European *welh₃-(s-) (to tear, seize upon).[1] Cognate to |Latin vello (to pluck, tug),[2] Latvian veli, Lithuanian vẽlės (the ghostly figures of the deceased), Gothic wilwan (to rob), and Hittite [Term?] (/⁠hullāi⁠/, fight, struggle).
