Inherited from Old Polish władać, from Old Czech vládati, from Proto-Slavic *voldati, alternative form of *volděti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *walˀdā́ˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂welh₁dʰh₁-, from *h₂welh₁- (“to rule”). Displaced Old Polish włodać.
