Borrowed from Japanese 和菓子 (wagashi, traditional Japanese confection).

  1. Traditional Japanese confectionery in various forms, often served with tea.

      Red bean paste (azuki), refined sugar, mochi rice cakes, and flour are often used as the main ingredients for wagashi. Wagashi are relatively small, low calorie, and made from plant-based materials: dairy produce, including milk, butter, and cream are rarely used for wagashi.
