Etymology[edit]

From Abenaki waniigan (pit trap, container for sundries);[1] compare klahigan (wooden trap). Compare Ojibwe waanikaan (pit, excavated hole) and English wammikin (also from Algonquian).

  1. A box, usually made of wood, used to store food on canoe or sledding trips.
