Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Literally, wine after beer yields pleasure. Currently the usage is literal, but originally the proverb is said to have been a metaphor for upwards social mobility (beer being associated with lower socioeconomic class, and wine with wealth).

Proverb[edit]

wijn na bier geeft plezier

  1. Drinking wine following the consumption of beer is pleasurable compared to the reverse, which believed to cause greater discomfort (through excessive inebriation and hangovers).
