From witt (knowledge, wisdom) +‎ -nes (-ness), akin to Old Norse vitni (whence the Danish vidne and Norwegian Bokmål vitne) and Gothic 𐍅𐌴𐌹𐍄𐍅𐍉𐌸𐍃 (weitwōþs).
