Etymology[edit]

From Proto-West Germanic *wunskabarn, from Proto-Germanic *wunskabarną. Cognate with Old Norse óskabarn. Equivalent to wūsc (wish) +‎ bearn (child). Compare also Middle High German wunschkint (adopted child) and Old Norse óskasunr (adopted son).
