Borrowed from Russian записка (zapiska), from записать (zapisatʹ, to write down, to register), from писать (pisatʹ, write), from Old East Slavic писати (pisati, to write; to paint), from Proto-Slavic *pisati, from Proto-Indo-European *peyḱ- (to paint, draw). Doublet of zapis.
