Etymology[edit]

According to Hoffmann, of Semitic origin; however, he does not explain any further. This word can only be connected to the group of Hebrew זֶבַח (zéḇaḥ, sacrifice), Arabic ذِبْح (ḏibḥ, sacrificial victim) and Ugaritic 𐎄𐎁𐎈 (dbḥ, sacrifice).
