Borrowed from Polish obiecać, from Proto-Slavic *oběťati. Displaced native Old East Slavic обѣчати (oběčati).

Compare Belarusian абяца́ць (abjacácʹ), borrowed from the same Polish word, as well as Russian обеща́ть (obeščátʹ), borrowed from Old Church Slavonic.
