From *yārtï (half), derived from Proto-Turkic *jār- (to crack, split, crush).

Cognate with Kazakh жарты (jarty), Kyrgyz жарты (jartı), Karachay-Balkar джарты (cartı), Uzbek yorti, Turkmen ýarty (half).
