From *yārïm (half), derived from Proto-Turkic *yār- (to crack, split, crush).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (yarïm, half); Kazakh жарым (jarym), Southern Altai јарым (ǰarïm), Uzbek yarim, Azerbaijani yarım, Khakas чарым (çarım), Tuvan чарым (çarım, half).
