Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Wholly borrowed from an unattested Middle Iranian term, composed of the etymon of նկար (nkar) and a suffix going back to Proto-Iranian *-ayHnah. Compare Persian نگارین (negârin, painted, coloured).

նկարէն (nkarēn)

  1. painted, coloured, variegated, varied with many colours
  2. embellished with imagery
