Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The origin is uncertain.

One suggestion is that it is derived from Proto-Indo-European *dóru (tree, wood),[1] via a Pre-Armenian r/u-stem noun *dóru-r, taking the zero-grade from the oblique *dr̥u-,[2] or directly from *dóru through an o-ua-u dissimilatory umlaut.[3] In this case cognate with տորգ (torg), տոռն (toṙn), տարգալ (targal). For the sense development Martirosyan compares Ancient Greek ὕλη (húlē, wood, timber; material, matter).
