From the root ח־ק־ק (kh-k-k), associated with חָקַק (khakák, to engrave, to etch; to ingrain, imprint). Compare Ge'ez ሕግ (ḥəgg, law), Classical Syriac ܚܘܩܐ (ḥuqqā, rule) Arabic حَقّ (ḥaqq, right), Tigrinya ሓቂ (ḥaqqi, truth).
