Persian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ang- (curve, bend). Cognate with Sogdian [script needed] (ʾʾkʾyšʾk /ākēšāk/, hook, pulling instrument), Sanskrit अङ्कुश (aṅkuśa, hook).

Compare Armenian ակիշ (akiš), an Iranian borrowing.
