Etymology[edit]

From Arabic مُسْتَمْلَكَة (mustamlaka, literally being taken possession of or dominated), probably following a word like أَرْض f (ʔarḍ, earth), from the root م ل ك (m-l-k) related to kingdoms and possession. Compare مَلَكَ (malaka).
