Etymology[edit]
From Ottoman Turkish مستملکه (müstemleke, “colony”), from Arabic مُسْتَمْلَكَة (mustamlaka, literally “being taken possession of or dominated”), probably following a word like أَرْض f (ʔarḍ, “earth”), from the root م ل ك (m-l-k) related to kingdoms and possession. Compare مَلَكَ (malaka).
