Etymology[edit]

Probably a variant of (or at least influenced by) क्षर् (kṣar), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *gẓʰar-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gžʰar-, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰgʷʰer-. If not that, then from Proto-Indo-European *kʷsel-, whence Old Norse skola (to wash).
