Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘦𑘰𑘜𑘳𑘭 (māṇusa), 𑘦𑘰𑘡𑘳𑘭 (mānusa), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀫𑀡𑀼𑀲𑁆𑀲 (maṇussa) (compare 𑀫𑀸𑀡𑀼𑀲 (māṇusa)), from Sanskrit मनुष्य (manuṣyá) (compare मानुष (mā́nuṣa)). Compare Konkani मनीस (manīs), Gujarati માણસ (māṇas), Punjabi ਮਨੁੱਖ (manukkha) / مَنُکّھ (manukkh), Nepali मानिस (mānis), Bengali মানুষ (manuś), Assamese মানুহ (manuh), মুনিহ (munih).
