Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Indo-European *reg- (“to dye”). Cognate with Proto-Iranian *ra(n)ǰ- (“to colour, dye”), whence Persian رخش (raxš, “red”), Khwarezmian rxtk (raxtak, “red”), Mazanderani رش (raš, “red (of cattle)”), Northern Kurdish reş (“black”) and Sogdian [script needed] (rɣš- /raxš/, “Rakhsh”), as well as Ancient Greek ῤέζω (rézō, “I dye, paint”).
