Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀭𑀳𑀤𑀺 (rahadi), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *ráźʰati (to remain, stay) (related to रहस् (rahas, isolation), रहस्य (rahasya, secret), रहायते (rahāyate, to be lonely)). Cognate with Punjabi ਰਹਿਣਾ (rahiṇā), Nepali रहनु (rahanu), Bengali রহা (roha)/রওয়া (rôoẇa), Gujarati રહેવું (rahevũ), Marathi राहणे (rāhṇe), Assamese ৰোৱা (rüa).
