Inherited from Early Assamese গৰু (goru), from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀕𑁄𑀭𑀽𑀯 (gorūva), from Sanskrit গোৰূপ (gorūpa). Cognate with Kamta গোৰু (güru), Sylheti ꠉꠞꠥ (goru), Bengali গরু (goru).
