Etymology[edit]

From หนึ่ง (nʉ̀ng, the one) +‎ ใน (nai, in) +‎ ตองอู (dtɔɔng-uu, Taungoo); from a quote in the 1932 novel Phu Chana Sip Thit ("Conqueror of the Ten Directions") by Jacob (1907–1956), referring to King Bayinnaung of Toungoo Empire.[1]
