Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Mongolic *sumun (“arrow”), compare Dongxiang sumu.
The sense 'district' arose during the Qing dynasty as a calque of Manchu ᠨᡳᡵᡠ (niru, “a large arrow, militia company, district”).[1]
