From ụ- (“nominalizing prefix”) + mọ (“to mold”) + alẹ̀ (“the land”), literally “Those who molded the land”, from Proto-Yoruba *ʊ-mãlɛ̀, compare with Itsekiri umalẹ̀, Olukumi ùmàlẹ́, perhaps ultimately from Proto-Edekiri *ʊ-mɔlɛ̀
