Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Low German Bolltje, diminutive of Boll (“roundish object”), from Proto-Germanic *bullǭ. Equivalent to Bolle (“bulb, tuber”) + -chen. Cognate with Dutch bolletje, Danish bolsje.
