Etymology[edit]
From Low German Bolltje, diminutive of Boll (“roundish object”), from Proto-Germanic *bullǭ, whence also Danish bolle. Compare the form Bollchen (“hard candy”) in northern colloquial German. Also cognate with Dutch bolletje.
