From Middle High German gestalt, perfect participle of stellen, stallen (already present in Old High German as gistalt from stellen), from Proto-West Germanic *stalljan (to put, position), from Proto-Indo-European *stel- (to place, put, post, stand). Cognate with German Gestalt.
