Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Indo-European *leyǵʰ- (“lick”).[1] Cognate with Proto-Germanic *likkōną (“lick”) (whence English lick) and Proto-Italic *lingō (“I lick (up)”) (whence Latin lingō).
