From Proto-Indo-European *sámh₂dʰos (sand), likely borrowed from a Western European substrate. Cognate with Ancient Greek ψᾰ́μμος (psámmos), ἄμαθος (ámathos, sand), Latin sabulum (coarse sand, gravel).[1]
