Philippa denies this reconstruction. ("The forms MHG sambt, sampt "sand" seem to hint at an original form PG *sam(a)da-, whence *sanda- by assimilation, but in view of the difference in age and distribution of the different forms it is more probable that the MHG forms are corruptions of the general Germanic word.") Kluge is also somewhat reluctant: Mit Rücksicht auf gr. ("In view of Greek ámathos f. "sand" and the variants MHG sampt, Bavarian samp it is possible to deduce an older Germanic *samad-, whence the normal word would have developed by assimilation.") — It's a great and justified reconstruction, but as always we treat it as scientific fact when it isn't.
