Etymology[edit]
Ultimately from the Mandarin pronunciation of Chinese 臺灣/台湾 (Táiwān) + -ia (“forming place names”), a transcription of a local tribe's endonym around the area of Anping, possibly Siraya taywan (“place of the people”).
