@Vahagn Petrosyan: You surely want to explain why Kurdish کاب / kab means exactly the same thing. Original meaning something like “a thing befalling” (such as a rope falls around a pale), Cheung, Johnny (2007) Etymological Dictionary of the Iranian Verb (Leiden Indo-European Etymological Dictionary Series; 2), Leiden, Boston: Brill, →ISBN, page 234, which is the naming rationale for the infectious disease Avestan 𐬐𐬀𐬞𐬀𐬯𐬙𐬌𐬱 (kapastiš)? Surely there are a lot of actual roots wanting in that Iranian root collection. Lagarde was far-sighted adducing this Armenian stem to explain Persian کبست (kabast, “colocynth”) (more likely a parallel formation of the Avestan than a cognate). @Fay Freak: Tsabolov has connected the Armenian with the Kurdish. I explain it as an Armenian borrowing due to confinement to Kurmanji and a narrow meaning. The Armenian term itself is probably an Iranian borrowing, but the details are unclear. I don't like the explanation from the root "to fall" for semantic reasons. Bailey mentions it as a homonym of the root "to hold". I will leave the existence of these *kap- roots and their interrelationship to Iranists. Vahag (talk) 20:03, 13 April 2022 (UTC)
