Etymology[edit]

@ZxxZxxZ: Can you possibly provide any information on the Persian etymon? --WikiTiki89 18:20, 18 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

I don't have access to all of my sources, and I couldn't mych anything at this time. @Vahagn Petrosyan can you help with this? Note that the first vowel in NPers turunj is probably omitted in Middle Iranian. j may be Arabization of g. Alternative pronunciation is toranj, but it is probably a late variant. There is also a verb, ترنج (turunj-) / ترنجیدن (toronjidan, (archaic) to become undulate). --Z 11:36, 24 November 2016 (UTC) Z 11:36, 24 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

According to Mayrhofer, related to the family of Middle Persian wʾtlng (wādrang, citron) and to Sanskrit मातुलुङ्ग (mātuluṅga, citron tree). There are also Dravidian and Austroasiatic parallels. See Classical Syriac ܛܪܘܓܐ. --Vahag (talk) 13:56, 24 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
