From Middle High German wider, from Old High German widar, from Proto-West Germanic *weþru, from Proto-Germanic *weþruz, akin to Old Saxon wethar, English wether. The form with a short vowel is Central German, perhaps standardised in part to avoid the homophony with wider (against) and wieder (again).
