Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German wegeln, a variant of wageln, itself derived from wagen, from Old High German wagōn, from Proto-West Germanic *wagōn, from Proto-Germanic *wagōną (to move, stir, sway). Cognate with Alemannic German wägelen ((of children) to roll), Transylvanian Saxon wegeln (to waggle, wobble), Swabian wägeln (to waver (in making a decision)).[1] Compare also English waggle, wiggle.
