Verb-object compound, composed of gratta (“to scratch, to scrape”) + Checca (hypocoristic form of the given name Francesca).

- (Rome) dessert originatied in Rome, consisting in hand-grated ice flavored with sweet syrup, handed in tall glasses and enjoyed with spoon and straw, usually on the beach. Often compared and confused with the Sicilian granita.
