Inherited from Ottoman Turkish قپامق, قاپامق (kapamak, to shut, close), from Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (kapa-, to close), from Proto-Turkic *kapa-.[1]

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (kap-, to close), Azerbaijani qapamaq (to shut, close), Chuvash хупма (hupma, to close, shut).
