Polish[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Old Polish obelżyć with a semantic shift of to make lighter -> to make light of -> to insult. By surface analysis, obe- + lżyć. The word died out in the middle of the 20th century [1][2] and came back, suggesting a re-innovation of obelga + -yć.
Pronunciation[edit]
- IPA(key): /ɔˈbɛl.ʐɨt͡ɕ/
- (Middle Polish) IPA(key): /ɔˈbɛl.ʐɨt͡ɕ/
- Rhymes: -ɛlʐɨt͡ɕ
- Syllabification: o‧bel‧żyć
Verb[edit]
obelżyć pf (imperfective lżyć)
- (transitive, colloquial) to insult (to be insensitive, insolent, or rude to somebody; to affront or demean) [+dative] or [+accusative = whom]
- Synonym: zelżyć
- (reflexive with się, Middle Polish) to be insulted
