Borrowed from Old East Slavic сапогъ (sapogŭ), from Proto-Slavic *sapogъ. The nominative and partitive singular stem is analogical from earlier saappaa < *saappaga (compare piiras). Compare Karelian šuappa, Livvi suappai, Veps sapag.
